Ted Moudis Associates Completes Design of IPG UM Office at 250 North Old Woodward Avenue
NEW YORK, N.Y. – November 9, 2016 – TMA has completed the design of UM’s – a division of IPG Mediabrands – new 53,000 square-foot office space, spread across one-and-a-half floors at 250 N. Old Woodward Avenue in downtown Birmingham, Michigan. The media agency had been operating out of three separate buildings, and enlisted TMA’s services to consolidate its more than 300 employees into one building. Earlier this year, they moved into the space, an old movie theatre that recently underwent conversion into a three-story, mixed-use property.
“We could not be happier in our new space,” said Scott Russell, Central Region President, UM. “TMA delivered exactly what we needed – a space that reflects the spirit of UM; contemporary, agile and inspiring.”
The new UM Detroit office features an open floor plan, with no private offices. Everything is wrapped around a central corridor in the middle of the office to allow maximum daylight to fill the space. The design inspiration was drawn from the quote ‘I shut my eyes in order to see’ by Paul Gaugin.’
According to Janice Fellows, a Design Director in the TMA Chicago office, “The intent was to make moving through the space an experience itself – with intrigue, surprise and unexpected moments. The ‘dark corridor’ that winds throughout the interior of the space has a variety of gathering and meeting rooms taking the user to colored portal transition points that lead into the open office staff space. The dark corridor was also used as a way to separate the more public areas from the staff area. Lighting, custom graphics, furniture and color played a major role in the design and creating an interesting and fun space that also feels professional and modern.”
Both IPG Mediabrands and UM, like may progressive firms today, wanted its office to provide more “variety and choice” in its worktype offerings. To that end, TMA provided a wide array of space types to support both the quiet thinker as well as more interactive sessions. Custom graphics sprinkled thoughout the space help continue the overall feel as well as enable wayfinding. The new office consists of a café/town hall area, large ancillary gathering spaces, hoteling areas, and 65 meeting rooms of various sizes, furniture and function.
